Reindeer Games

Are you ready for some cuteness!?!

A few weeks ago, we took a short trip to central Washington, near the Leavenworth area. Leavenworth is an utterly charming Bavarian-style town in the Cascade Mountains. And the surrounding area offers some truly smile inducing surprises.

Like Leavenworth Reindeer Farm.

At the end of every trip, we always play the “your favorite part” game. We immediately agreed that this was our highlight (which in no way diminishes any of the other wonderful experience we’ll share!)

But seriously…how could it not be!?! Look at that face!

The visit starts with a very informational introduction to the farm and the species. Among other notable facts, reindeer are endangered and, very recently, the last remaining herd known to roam between Canada and the Pacific Northwest was down to its last member. These wonderfully majestic creatures are virtually extinct in the contiguous United States.

Championing their cause is Leavenworth Reindeer Farm, the only facility in the U.S. that offers tours and interactive experiences with their herd.

Which means hanging out up close with these guys. You can pat them on the back, or grab a quick photo op. Ridiculous cheek-to-cheek smile required the whole time, of course.

On the way in, grab a little reindeer food to help make new friends.

Quick PSA…feeding these guys is not always the most glamorous activity! Just like us, they love their treats. Not always like us, they manage to always be adorable and gentle as they gobble it up from your hands. (Can’t say the same for us and cupcakes!)

Once all the goodies are gone, you’re free to meander around. Play a little Monopoly, or snuggle with the youngsters. Just don’t make fun of any reindeer with red noses. They might come in handy on a foggy Christmas Eve night.

Look at this little baby!
And bigger Sven, who loves cooling off in his impeccably clean trough.

When you’ve had your fill – okay, in reality that’s not possible, but at some point they need their peace and quiet – there’s plenty more fun to be had.

Like turkeying around with Tom.

Or horsing around with the other Sven.

As a little side note, this might be the epitome of happy for Margaret. She grew up riding horses, and they certainly hold a special place in her heart.

And it’s possible that Sven worked his way right into Neal’s heart too!

Keep wandering around, there’s plenty more to see.

Oink to the pigs.

Neigh to the ponies.

Or purr to the cat.

After all, there’s nothing wrong with feeling like a kid again! Many thanks to the folks at Leavenworth Reindeer Farm for letting us do just that!
