Arles is one of those unique places that preserves its ancient history with southern French charm. It’s “monumental” for UNESCO World Heritage sites dating back to the Ancient Romans and Vincent Van Gogh’s residency between 1888 and 1889.
Around the 2nd Century BC, Arles was an important province of Gallia Narbonensis, the Roman Empire’s stronghold in the Languedoc region of what is now Provence.
Speckled throughout the city are Ancient Roman monuments,
Which mesh perfectly with the city’s provencal surroundings.
As you head to the center of town, you’ll run into the Le Jardin de la Maison de Sante a Arles.
Although remarkably peaceful, Van Gogh visited Arles as his mental health was beginning to decline, and the hospital behind the garden is where he was treated after he cut off his left ear.
On a brighter note, it is also where he created some of his most famous works.
After getting your fill of history and culture, you’ll be ready for a chilled glass of rose and something delicious to eat. Luckily, Arles has plenty of great restaurants, perfect for sightseeing and people watching.
Just be sure to pick somewhere with weather worn shutters and flowers along the awning.
With your inhibitions slightly lowered, it’s the perfect time to pop into some of the shops. Where you’ll be guaranteed to leave with a few too many French silk delicacies.
A perfect token by which to remember a perfectly pleasant day.

For me, the first association with Arles is definitely Van Gogh! I didn’t know however they have Roman ruins. Looks gorgeous!

You can certainly see Van Gogh’s influence but the Roman ruins are incredibly well-preserved and stand out beautifully!
